Born in Manchester in 1963 he studied with Oliver Knussen and Simon Bainbridge. Studied at Cardiff University and the Guildhall School of Music, and in 1990 was the Benjamin Britten Fellow at Tanglewood where he studied with Lukas Foss. In 1991 he was awarded the Britten Prize, the Mendelssohn Scholarship in 1992 and the PRS Prize in 1995.
Between 1993 and 1996 he was the Northern Arts Fellow in Composition at Durham University
and currently teaches composition at Royal Holloway College and the Royal Academy of Music. Since 1990 he has completed over 20 commissions, mainly of chamber and orchestral music. (2003)
