Vicente Greco (1886-1924) was a bandoneonist, director, and composer. The modest economic circumstances of his family forced him to work from childhood; he was unable to graduate from primary school. When he discovered a small concertina in his parents' closet, he refused to part with it. According to Julio De Caro, he auditioned for Sebastian Ramos Mejia at the age of 14, who advised the family to buy him a bandoneon. Several of his brothers were also musical. He was the author of several titles, still popular today, and recorded for Columbia Records in 1910 and 1911 and later for the Atlanta label. His orchestra was the first that called itself Orquesta Tipica Criolla when recording, in order to distinguish itself from other groups that performed non-Argentine popular music.
