Tower grew up in South America. She has degrees from Bennington College and Columbia University. She organized the DaCapo Players in 1969 and was their pianist when they won the
Naumburg Award in 1973. Tower has won many major awards and prizes including 3 NEA's, a Guggenheim, a Kennedy Center Friedman award and the Grawemeyer prize in 1990. She was a composer-in-residence at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in 1991. She is down to earth and relaxed in her approach to music and life, a charming lady.
