He began his musical training studying the instrument in London under the guidance of Len Williams and later his son, the celebrated virtuoso John Williams, while simultaneously perfecting his skills in Italy by attending the summer courses at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena led by Andrés Segovia and Alirio Díaz. In 1964 he became a tutor at the former Royal Manchester College of Music, subsequently taking on the pivotal role of guitar professor and head of the classical guitar department at the newly established Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in Manchester in 1973, a chair he held with immense prestige for over forty years.
